The Synthetic & Rayon Textiles Export Promotion Council

Mandatory use of barcode while exporting to Saudi Arabia

Dear Members,

This is to bring to your kind attention and notice on an important & mandatory regulation released by the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO).

We understand that the Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization (SASO) has announced new set of products to be regulated under the SABER System.

SABER System is an e-platform system aiming to facilitate procedures of conformity assessment certificates for consumer products before entering the Saudi market. The system was established to enforce the new Saudi Product Safety Program known as SALEEM and is effective from 1st January 2020.

List of products covered, and the schedule of implementation is enclosed for your reference. Textile is also one of the products covered in the list.

The regulation mandates having a barcode on Shipping Boxes & Invoices from                      1st January’ 2020 to clear customs.

All products exported to the Saudi Market must display barcodes on the packaging and the bar code should comprise of 13 digits as per global standards. Barcodes should follow uniqueness principle to ensure that the barcode is not duplicated throughout the world.

We would like to inform our members that GS1 India is the only authorised body to issue barcodes in India (www.gs1india.org).

GS1 India barcode, starting with prefix 890, provides unambiguous and universal identification to your products. The unique product code could then be encoded to various barcode forms – liner barcode, QR code, Datamatrix, etc., based on the requirement to enable instant capture of product information. These barcode for products enables authentication of its authorised owner, helping differentiate with product lookalikes.

Additionally, beware of any private entities misrepresenting themselves as authorised agents of GS1 for allocation of GS1 barcodes.
