You may be are aware that RBI had issued Circular No. 39 dated 6th September, 2013 notifying that any person resident in India may take outside India or having gone out of India on a temporary visit, may bring into India (other than to and from Nepal and Bhutan) currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes up to an amount not exceeding Rs.10,000/-.

Subsequently, RBI issued Circular No. 146, dated 19.06.2014 enhancing the amount to Rs.25,000/-. As per the aforementioned circular any person resident in India may take outside India or having gone out of India on a temporary visit, may bring into India (other than to and from Nepal and Bhutan) currency notes of Government of India and Reserve Bank of India notes up to an amount not exceeding Rs.25,000/-. Further the circular also provided that all residents and non-residents (except citizens of Pakistan and Bangladesh and also other travelers coming from and going to Pakistan and Bangladesh) can take out Indian currency notes up to Rs. 25,000 while leaving the country  through an airport.

The limit was enhanced in view of the evolving economic conditions and with a view to facilitating travel requirements of residents travelling abroad as well as non-residents visiting India.

The Board (CBEC) vide Circular No.03/2015-Customs dated January 16, 2015  reiterates RBI’s Circular No. 146, dated 19.06.2014 and accordingly wants all Chief Commissioners to ensure that the RBI guidelines are carefully followed by the officers under their charge. Further, Board wants wide publicity to be given to these guidelines by displaying them at prominent places at the airports etc. so that no harassment is caused to the genuine passengers. Board wants Officers to be suitably sensitized in the matter. Any non-compliance on the part of the officers will be viewed seriously.
Members may take a note of the above.

Thanking you,

Yours faithfully,
